carolyndraws is the brainchild of Toronto-based illustrator, letterpress printer and people watcher, Carolyn Verkuyl. After a successful advertising career using her scribbles to win pitches and sell people stuff, Carolyn turned her uniquely Canadian sense of humour, illustration style and love of printing into a one of a kind line of paper goods with wide appeal.
Every illustration, idea and snicker has fallen out of her brain and all of the hand-drawn fonts on every piece are uniquely hers too.
Most of the line is hand-printed on an antique letterpress, one colour and one sheet at a time using only hand-mixed inks and paper she cuts herself. Gift tags use all of the remnants, ensuring no fancy letterpress paper goes to waste! carolyndraws' world famous Super Magnets? Made by hand too and stronger for it. Carolyn designs and illustrates each calendar in her studio in Toronto. They are printed locally on beautiful smooth, matte recycled stock.
carolyndraws products can be found at retailers across Canada, including THESE fine shops. She regularly exhibits at the Toronto One of a Kind Show and other awesome handmade shows across Ontario (see where she'll be next HERE).
10 THINGS ABOUT CAROLYN, BY CAROLYN
I'm an art director by training, an illustrator by accident and an observer of life by necessity.
Once upon a time, I went to University and the Ontario College of Art, but I never took any fine art courses. (That's right. Not the sharpest crayon in the box.)
I ended up in advertising. (See above.)
When I'm not scribbling, coming up with engaging ideas or winning pitches, I'm juggling hockey schedules, swimming lessons, three children and a rescue dog named Larry. Or lurking in the marker aisle at the Art Supply Store.
I learned to ski later than most and haven't broken anything, yet.
I like black jelly beans. A lot. And I have a thing for washi tape that's not long off from being a problem.
No kid has ever turned down my spaghetti sauce.
I don't like cooked fruit in foods. (I'm talking to you, pineapple-on-pizza, *shudder*)
I was drawing before I was potty trained.
My favourite place to be in the world is anywhere my family is, but especially at our cabin.
